Penny Paul

Associate Counsel

Penny Paul is one of British Columbia's most senior and respected family law lawyers concentrating in family law including divorces and division of property and child parenting plans, child support, spousal support, and marriage-like relationships. She has practiced in this area for over 40 years.

Ms. Paul received her law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1982 and was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1983. She has been in private practice since 1983.

Ms. Paul joined the firm of Mackoff Mohamed in September 2023 to be the head of development for their Family Law Group and to carry on her own practice.

Ms. Paul has published on topics relating to BC Divorce and Family Law. She has been a guest speaker at estate planning seminars and in continuing education for lawyers on advanced family law topics.

Ms. Paul has earned a reputation as a tough, but personable lawyer.  She is smart and pays attention to detail.  She has a knack of getting to the bottom line fast and finding the solution for her clients in as painless a manner as possible.  She only resorts to court if necessary to advance her client's interests.

Ms. Paul has a special talent in division of property for medium to high-net-worth clients, particularly those with business interests. Numbers are her specialty.  She knows corporate and taxation issues and was on the Dean's Honor List in the Accounting concentration in the Faculty of Commerce at U.B.C.   Maximizing a claim or minimizing the damage from a spouse's claim in a complex property case with corporate interests needs a lawyer who understands the issues and is good at the numbers and good at reading corporate balance sheets. Not all lawyers can do that.

Ms. Paul has appeared in all levels of court in British Columbia.  Check out one of her most recent cases resulting in the opposing client having to fully compensate his spouse for all of her legal fees.  This is a highly successful extraordinary remedy.  https://www.bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/20/07/2020BCSC0729.htm and  https://www.bccourts.ca/jdb-txt/sc/23/03/2023BCSC0332.htm

Ms. Paul is a qualified Family Law Mediator.  Her intelligence and common sense most times allows her mediation clients to come to an acceptable solution without going to court.  She has participated in countless mediations.  She hopes to widen her mediation practice at the Mackoff Mohamed firm in conjunction with the development of their Family Law Group.

A smaller part of Ms. Paul’s practice is in Wills and Estates.  It is helpful to a family law client if their lawyer is well versed in this area of the law.  Part of the separation and Divorce process is revising wills and estate planning documents.  Ms. Paul has been doing Wills and other personal planning documents for her clients for over 40 years.
